This book articulates a theory of learning based on learning research and translates that theory into a model of classroom instruction. This model is based on the assumption that the process of learning involves the interaction of five types, or dimensions of thinking, which are loose metaphors for the way the mind works during learning. These dimensions are: (1) developing positive attitudes and perceptions about learning; (2) acquiring and integrating knowledge; (3) extending and refining knowledge; (4) using knowledge meaningfully; and (5) developing productive habits of mind.
