HE PHYSIOLOGICAL changes that occur during adaptation to altitude have been reviewed by Stickney and Van Liere (I). For a number of years Hurtado and his asso-ciates have been studying these adaptive changes. These have included many studies of work performance on Peruvian military per-sonnel at Lima (sea level) and at Morococha, 14,900 feet (14.9 M)4 above sea level (2).
