STVK02 Tutor: Fariborz Zelli Consequences of Post-Materialism Testing Predicted Changes and an Extension to the Theory of Post-Materialism

Post-Materialism is a theory introduced in the 1970's. Post-Materialism is set of values that is stated to have changed, foremost in industrial countries. This shift in values is predicted to lead to changes in attitudes, actions and the social structure, because those who prioritize Post-Materialist values are suggested to think and identify themselves differently. In this thesis, changes in environmental concern, political participation and gender equality are tested. In addition to this, a modern but controversial extension to the theory is tested, being consumption, to see if Post-Material values have any influence on the way the public consumes. Statistical method is used to see changes over time. The results show that Post-Materialism does not seem to lead to more concern for the environment or new ways of consumption. Political action and gender equality on the other hand seems to have a connection to Post-Materialism, although they are both in declin
