Over the next week, the patient became more symptomatic with increasing abdominal pain and tenderness. Despite antimicrobial treatment, the leukocytosis of over 20000 persisted. A CT scan was performed and revealed that the segment of aorta affected by the infection had become aneurysmal, dilating to 3.7 cm (Fig. 2). With clinical and radi-ographic evidence of progression, the patient was taken to the operating room on the following day for resection of the infected and aneursymal artery with superficial femoral vein reconstruction.
