Strategies for Principals Maximizing Vietnamese Parent Involvement in Schools

United States today has unique and special needs. If Vietnamese young-sters are to succeed in school, princi-pals must learn to meet these needs. For the last 15 years, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of Southeast Asians in the United States. The highest percentage consists of Vietnamese (about 46.2 per-cent), who settled on the West Coast, especially in California. Contrary to the popular stereotype of the &dquo;model minority&dquo; used for Asian youth, there have been serious problems with today’s Vietnamese students. The majority of the new refugees have limited English proficiency, and their parents have had limited or no formal education. Given these facts, and in light of the new restructuring trend in schools, what can principals do to help Vietnamese students
