This paper reviews the principles, implementation, management, formats, problems, and research in modular instruction. A module is defined as a self-contained, independent unit of a planned series of learning activities designed to help the student accomplish certain well-defined objectives. The learner is able to proceed at his own rate, choose his own learning mode, select among a variety of topics, identify his strengths and weaknesses, and recycle if necessary. Ideally modules should include a pretest, objectives, criteria for success, instructional activities, a posttest, and remedial instruction. When designing a module, the following steps are recommended: a) identification of the subject matter to be taught, b) definition of a set of objectives and evaluation items, a decision upon the hierarchy of the objectives and sequence of instruction, d) statement of rationale, e) development of a pretest, f) design of units of written instruction and selection of stud
