Until recently, the earliest versions of the Unix operating system were believed to have been lost completely. In 2008, however, a restoration team from the Unix Heritage Society completed an effort to resurrect and restore the first edition Unix to a running and usable state from a newly discovered listing of the system’s assembly source code. The Unix operating system is arguably one of the most influential OSs in computing. Designed and implemented by a small group of researchers at AT&T’s Bell Laborato-ries, Unix has since been modified and extended by thousands of individuals and companies. Commercialized in the 1980s by AT&T as the product System V, Unix spawned a multitude of derivative systems
