Dogs have been anaesthetized with halothane, ether and cyclopropane, and the depth was kept constant at any desired level by maintaining an unvarying gas concentration in alveolar air. Under these steady-state conditions carbon dioxide response curves have been elicited at different depths of anaesthesia. All three anaesthetic drugs caused a progressive reduction of ventilation volumes as the concentration was increased. In one subject there was an augmentation of ventilation at moderate levels of ether anaesthesia. Halothane, ether and cyclopropane all produced apnoea at an alveolar concentration approximately 2.2 times the minimum concentration required to main-tain surgical anaesthesia.
