The construction of tests of oral ccmpetence in a n language requivas consideration of several factors. The face valiaity of the test, or the degree to which students feel tney are performing a real communicative act, is illustrated with a number of sodel testing situations. Content validity, or the ability of a test to measure what has been learned by students, is demonstrated by sample tests at the beginning and intermediate levels. Criteria for scoring tests are illustrated with further examples from description and listening tests. Fina7'4, rating scales are discussed with a variety of examples.
