Vascular Surgeon Edwin J. Wylie, MD (1918-1982), Pioneer and Visionary

friends-was a scholarly teacher, master sur-geon, pioneer, and visionary within the develop-ing specialty of vascular surgery. The following tribute provides insight into his life. He came from a medical family. His father and mother went to Montana to homestead, after graduation from Drake University. Soon his father, who had favored the ministry, entered medical school at the University of Cincinnati. Jack was born there on October 13, 1918. After his father obtained his medical degree, the Wylies returned to their na-tive Iowa where Dr. Charles A. Wylie began gen-eral practice. In 1925 the family, which then in-cluded Jack's sister Betty, moved to Southern California and settled in San Bernardino. The se-nior Wylie decided to specialize in pediatrics. He traveled to Hollywood on weekends to become certified in this specialty, and their home became his office and treatment center with Jack's moth-er the all-around assistant. Jack was an avid reader, and he enjoyed the extracurricular activity of debating. He did not have an athletic build, and at San Bernardino High School he did not participate in team sports. But one friend recalls that Jack asked to join in
