Brief Communication: Development of Invasive Tumors in the "Nude" Mouse After Injection of Cultured Human Melanoma Cells 1

SUMMARY-Cultured human melanoma cells injected into the thymus-deficient "nude " mouse induced invasive tumors, positively identified as human by karyotypic analysis. Cultured human and murine normal embry-onic cells not only failed to take, but were shown histologically to have disappeared from the injection site 11-32 days after inoculation.-J Nat Cancer Inst 48: 1531-1533, 1972. THE MOUSE MUTANT "nude " first described by Flanagan (1) and found to be thymus deficient by Pantelouris (2) can accept allografts and heterografts of normal and malignant tissues. Rat skin (3), human malignant tumors (4, 5) and skin (6, 7), and thymus cells and whole thymuses (7, 8) from nonisogenic mice were successfully implanted. The normal tissue grafts survived indefinitely, with morphologic and functional integrity, and th
