This new type of Salmonella (var. orion) to be described is represented by two cultures isolated from a rectal swab specimen taken from one individual on April 2, 1945. The two cultures were identical in every characteristic observed except for slight variations in the fermentation of cellobiose. The organisms were actively motile rods conforming to the morphologic and staining properties of the genus; they produced large amounts of hydrogen sulfide but failed to form indole or liquefy gelatin. Urea medium (Rustigian and Stuart, 1941) was not hydrolyzed, but trimethylamine oxide (Wood and Baird, 1943) was readily reduced; after an initial acidification purple milk became alkaline in from 4 to 6 days.
