An effort was made to identify a taxonomy of critical teaching skills to be used in teacher education. A systematic search was undertaken involving a search of the pertinent literature, a categorical listing of skills, the development of criteria for the identification of critical skills, and listing the critical skills necessary for teacher preparation. After the literature search, 132 skills were identified and listed as "pre-active, " "interactive, " and "post-active. " Six screening criteria were established to ensure that the item fit the requirements of a teaching skill and was supported by research.
