The self-access approach to language learning requires learners to be responsible, diligent, and motivated. However, very little research has been done in this field. Thus, the aims of this study are to ascertain the needs of the learners and to investigate their attitudes and motivation towards this mode of learning. A questionnaire was administered to collect the data from 585 learners and in-depth interviews were conducted with 5 % of the sample. Statistical analyses suggest that the learners consider the major roles of self-access centres are to help them learn English independently and equip them for their studies and future careers.
