Interactions of sulfate-promoted iron oxide SO2- 4Fe2O3 with 1-butene and n-butane were investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption/reaction coupled with mass spectrometry. By reacting with the sulfate ion, 1-butene adsorbed on SO4 2-Fe2O3 promoted sulfate decomposition. In contrast, adsorbed n-butane desorbed readily upon heating above 320 K. Implications of these findings in catalysis by this material are discussed. © 1990.close202
