The soil samples from three sites of east coast areas in 1, 5 and 9 months after large-scale forest fires were collected and analyzed for polychlorinated dibenzo-??-dioxin and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). At 1 month after fires, the concentrations of PCDD/Fs in soils were higher than in corresponding unburned soils, and the homologue profiles were changed compared to those of unburned soils. However, at 5 months after fires, the concentrations of PCDD/Fs in soil decreased approximately 70% compared to those of 1 month after fires, and the homologue profiles showed that OCDD dominated as shown in unburned soil. From the coincidence of PCDD/Fs concentrations and homologue profile changes, it was considered that PCDD/Fs were produced during forest fires and might be introduced into the environment by atmospheric emission of soil deposition. We estimated that in 1990's approximately 2.95 g/yr (0.04 g I-TEQ/yr)of PCDD/Fs were annually released from forest fires and in year 2000 only approximately 54.08 g/yr (0.77 g I-TEQ/yr) of PCDD/Fs were produced. The estimation of PCDD/Fs emissions from the forest fires was 0.1~1.9% of that from MSWIs. But, these numbers didn`t contain the atmospheric emissions during forest fires, therefore the actual production from forest fires should be much larger.clos
