The conference was a joint effort of the Instituto Oceanográfco de la Arada (INOCAR) and the Marine Policy Center of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The purose was to explore the role of science and scientific organizations in management of the coastal and ocean assets of the then newly created Galápagos Mare Resources Reserve.
