Eastman Chemical Company has a long history of promoting and implementing energy efficiency. It is commonly known that energy costs are significant to the chemical industry. Because of cost pressures, energy has been a common target for process and efficiency improvements for many years. In addition to cost pressures, Eastman has sustainability goals to create value through environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic growth. Energy efficiency addresses both these goals and cost concerns. In 2010, the company set an aspirational goal to reduce energy intensity by 25% over a ten year period, making a public commitment to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Better Buildings, Better Plants program, recognizing that changes were needed to take the program to a new level.
