The Department of Energy funded development of a methodology that could be used by glass producers to increase furnace efficiency, and that could serve as a model for other energy-intensive industries. Accordingly, a team comprising PPG Industries, Eclipse, and DIAL at Mississippi State University developed and demonstrated the use of an energy assessment protocol for oxy-fuel fired glass furnaces. The protocol identifies potential opportunities for energy savings, based on a structured evaluation of the operating furnace, and then confirms the effectiveness of any changes made.
