While PIV is an estabilshed experimental technique for determining a velocity field, quantifying the uncertainty related with this method remains a challenging task. The purpose of this work is to provide a procedure for estimating the un- certainties associated with time-averaged two dimensional flow field measurements obtained by PIV. An example of uncertainty analysis is conducted for a stirred tank. However, the analysis may be generally applied to any mean velocity field. The validity of this work is demonstred via Monte Carlo simulations. In the simulated recordings, the effect of particle image displacement, velocity gradient and seeding density are considered.
