Some Notions, Stories, and Tales about Music and Education in Society: The Coin's Other Side

abstract: This invited speech was about various aspects of the world of music education in the United States, including how European art music continues to be emphasized, how music educators think it is their job to improve people's taste in music, the folly of top-down curricular initiatives, especially federal ones, and more.This article is a slightly revised version of the author's "Invited Address" for the Society for Research in Music Education, presented at the biennial convention of the MENC: The National Association for Music Education in Washington, DC on 11 March 2000
