Press regulation post Leveson – where are we now?

The Press Regulation Panel has this week recognised Impress as a post-Leveson Inquiry independent regulator of the UK press under the Royal Charter. This article explains the regulatory environment and the important implications stemming from the decision. Founded in late 2013, Impress has modelled itself on Leveson’s recommendations and claims to be the only regulator that is truly independent from the industry. The article also discusses the proposed section 40 of the Crimes and Courts Act 2013 (UK), (yet to be commenced by the Theresa May\u27s Conservative Government) which aims to make it easier for people to bring libel and privacy cases against newspapers, whilst encouraging publishers to sign up to an approved regulator, or risk being liable for any complainant\u27s costs.     &nbsp
