The trans-Pacific communication and press networks established during the war had permanently fractured the imperial communication and press systems of the pre-war years. Imperial perspectives on communication policy remained influential after the war83 and the British Commonwealth continued to play a major role on the co-operative development of international communication infrastructure. At the same time, the strategic and commercial importance of the US relationship for Australia was firmly established. This changed situation was first given formal recognition in the realm of international communication policy via the 1945 Bermuda agreement
