Safety in the Underground – Coupling CFD with Pedestrian Simulations

The project ORPHEUS aims to improve the safety of underground stations in case of a fire event. For that purpose, CFD simulations of smoke and heat spread coupled with climate data of the underground system are performed on JURECA. The simulation data is utilized to predict the impairment of a multi-level escape route system. In this talk, a concept considering the interaction between the smoke spread and the evacuation process will be presented. This enhanced route choice model is based on the cognitive map concept incorporating agent-based perception and decision-making. The resulting routing dynamics are the centerpiece to systematically evaluate the resilience of a complex escape route system
