Resistance to the indigenous world in Colombia. The case of the ethnic groups Amorúa and Wayúu

It seems that the indigenous world is still constructing itself from a Western perspective in a problematic way; ignorance and non-recognition of circulating difference in mainstream society signify a “new identity” for indigenous peoples that does not correspond to their cultural system. The linearity proper to this type of analysis results in speeches that fail to understand dissident knowledge production. This creates a gap between the self-constructing image of the indigenous world and the meaning of being indigenous today. This split produces a deconstruction of the meaning of being indigenous established from stereotypes that contribute to the simplification of cultural features, which is then generalized and reproduced by and in the mainstream society.The fieldwork conducted in 2010 in the department of La Guajira with the Wayuu people, and in the department of Vichada, Colombia, with the Amorúa people in 2013, allowed a reflection on how, from the Western perspective, a blurred and prejudiced image of the indigenous world is constructed. Both the Amorúa and the Wayuu people are clear cases of stigmatization with regards to cultural and ethnic features that circulate in society, and are well supported by the State and the academia.Parece ser que el mundo indígena aún sigue construyéndose desde una mirada occidental de manera problemática, el desconocimiento y el no reconocimiento de la diferencia circulante en la sociedad mayoritaria imprime en los pueblos indígenas una “nueva identidad” que poco corresponde a su sistema cultural. La linealidad característica de este tipo de análisis resulta en discursos que no logran entender la producción de saberes disidentes y crea así un desfase entre la imagen que se construye del mundo indígena y lo que significa hoy en día ser indígena. Esta traducción se convierte en la desconstrucción de lo indígena a partir de estereotipos que deja como resultado la simplificación de rasgos culturales, que luego es generalizada y reproducida por y en la sociedad mayoritaria.El trabajo de campo realizado en el 2010 en el departamento de la Guajira con el pueblo wayúu, y en el departamentodel Vichada, Colombia, con el pueblo amorúa en el 2013, permitió reflexionar acerca de cómo desde la perspectiva occidental se construye una imagen desdibujada y prejuiciosa del mundo indígena. Tanto el pueblo amorúa como el pueblo wayúu, son casos evidentes de estigmatización de rasgos culturales étnicos que circulan en la sociedad, y que además están sostenidos en versiones estatales y académicas
