Parent's attitude to childrens literacy of Home Economics

In contemporary society the International Federation for Home Economics – IFHE strives to preserve the department of home economics, which is still many times wrong interpreted only as pursuance of household chores. Home economics is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary sphere which strives to have an effect on individual, family and social welfare. In the research part of my diploma thesis I wanted to find out what is the parents' relationship towards household literacy, do they think that home economics is important for child development, how important they find that children have specific skills and knowledge and when and where they should acquire them. The sample included 85 parents of children attending fifth and sixth grade of primary school. Data were collected with a online questionnaire. Results showed that parents have a good opinion about the topics dealt with in the sixth grade and slightly worse opinion about the topics dealt with in the fifth grade. Home economics' contents that parents consider important are especially the ones connected with economics, waste separation and nourishment and they find the ones with textile and clothing themes less important. Therefore, parents support child domestic literacy. They think it is logical for children to deal with contents that enable them to acquire skills and knowledge needed for everyday life in primary school
