The increasing trend of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), as observed in the last few years, seemed to have stabilised in 2003. The continuous increase of syphilis diagnoses and the outbreak of Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) among men who have sex with men (MSM), indicate an increase of sexual risk behaviour. Permanent alertness will be required to prevent a further spread of STIs and HIV. As of August 2004, a total of 9767 HIV cases were reported in the Netherlands, of which 847 were newly diagnosed in 2003. By the end of 2003, there were an estimated 16400 people living with HIV/AIDS in the Netherlands.
