In the working out of a sustainably-safe road traffic, uniformity of traffic facilities is an important point of particular attention. The uniformity of rural access roads could be improved by introducing a middle carriageway breadth for motor vehicles. Its marking consists of broken lines. The rest of the space consists of two edge markings (sometimes in red asphalt) and is meant for cyclists. Such lanes are called 'non-compulsory (bicycle) lanes'. In an earlier publication (See ITRD E201401), SWOV reported a comparison between access roads with and without such a motor vehicle area.
