The most efficient way to make the use of Daytime Running Lights (DRL) compulsory is a technical measure: to make certain that the lighting of each newly bought vehicle will automatically switch on or off, when starting or turning off the engine. At this moment such a measure is not politically possible within the European Community. It is pointed out that an important deficiency in previous studies is that the relationship between a reduction of the number of accidents and the increasing use of DRL could not be demonstrated in a convincing way.
