The problems of traffic unsafety on rural highways are studied in the Beemster, in which the fatal accidents increased suddenly twice. For this study a set-up was made, which is described. Recommendations are presented for measures to decrease the traffic unsafety in this area. Furthermore criteria are presented for research on a longer range for the lay-out of rural highways, which can lead to common applicable infrastructural changes for the increase of traffic safety in rural areas
