The recent rapid increase in the penetration of renewable sources of generation in electricity markets has introduced a new challenge for system operators due to the inherent variability of these sources. An effective solution to this challenge is to use storage capacity to offset the variabilty. An additional advantage of storage is that it can also shift load from peak to off-peak periods and lower system costs. Since electric batteries are relatively expensive, a promising form of storage is to use deferrable demand devices to decouple the purchase of electricity from the delivery of an energy service, such as thermal storage for space conditioning and hot water.
