Diagnoses of primary Actinobacillus equuli, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus zooepidemicus, Salmonella aboertivo equina, Staphylococcus aureus, Serratia marcescens, Pasteurella sp. and Clostridium sp. have at times been cited as the agent in this intricate disease complex with conflicting data.
