La censure télévisuelle de 1988 et le conflit nord-irlandais

International audienceThe influence the media can exercise on the conflict in Northern Ireland is considerable, as shown by the general outcry that followed the broadcas- ting, in April 1988, of Death on the Rock on Thames Television. As it asserted that the three members of the IRA killed that year by a British anti-terrorist unit posted in Gibraltar were neither armed nor in the process of booby-trap- ping a car, the programme was vehemently criticized by the Conservatives. The mediatisation, then the mediation, of the incident became bones of contention. The Broadcasting Ban on members of Irish terrorist organizations introduced on October 19th, 1988, was undoubtedly an additional symptom of the distrust of the authorities towards the power of British television. The present text focuses on the legitimacy of this ban that changed the repre- sentation of the conflict in Northern Ireland on British television, before measuring its impact and its efficiency.L’influence exercée par les médias au sujet du conflit en Irlande du Nord est de taille. Le tollé général ayant suivi la diffusion, en avril 1988, de Death on the Rock sur la troisième chaîne de la télévision anglaise en atteste. L’émission, en affirmant que les trois membres de l’IRA tués par une unité anti-terroriste britannique postée à Gibraltar n’étaient ni armés, ni en train de piéger une voiture, a reçu un barrage de critiques hostiles de la part des Conservateurs ; son écho a clairement été supérieur à l’incident même. La médiatisation, puis la médiation, sont ainsi devenues l’objet d’un nouvel enjeu. L’interdiction de diffuser des discours, communiqués ou entretiens de membres d’organisations terroristes irlandaises instaurée le 19 octobre 1988 est assurément un symptôme supplémentaire de la méfiance des autorités face au pouvoir de la télévision britannique.
