Vers l’établissement d’une « nationalité noire » ? Le rêve haïtien de James Theodore Holly

International audienceThe thirty years preceding the Civil War saw the emergence of a radical and immediatist abolitionist movement, particularly among Blacks who, for the most part, adhered to the ‘stay and fight’ ideology. Most African-American leaders were then firmly opposed to emigration and denounced the American Colonization Society and its African projects. Yet, at the very same time, a number of black activists did advocate relocation beyond the borders of the United States, but struggled to find a consensus concerning the place where they should settle. At the beginning of the 1850s, James Theodore Holly, a free Black, started promoting the virtues of emigration to Haiti more specifically. With the help of a white abolitionist, James Redpath, commissioned by the Haitian government itself, Holly encouraged his peers to move to the Black Republic, which he considered as the best place to (re)construct the black community.Thus, this article will examine in what conditions thousands of African-Americans decided to leave their homeland and relocate in Haiti. This Haitian experience, a subject that has been marginalized in the historiography of slavery, abolition and colonialism, was part of a larger and more complex process, namely the birth of black nationalism. The author therefore intends to contribute to a reconsideration of black efforts to encourage emigration, in order to show the real diversity in black abolitionist and nationalist thought on the eve of the Civil War.Entre los años 1830 y 1860, un movimiento abolicionista radical, partidario de la doctrina "stay and fight" (quedarse y luchar) vio la luz. La mayoría de los abolicionistas negros de aquella época rechazaban el proyecto de colonización de los negros libres y emancipados de Africa organizado por la American Colonization Society (ACS). Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, algunos activistas afroamericanos, opuestos a los proyectos de la ACS, abogaban por una emigración selectiva aunque no encontraban un consenso sobre el lugar para dicha emigración. A principios de 1850, James Theodore Holly, un negro libre, sostuvo con más fuerza la idea de emigrar a Haití. El autor muestra la diversidad del pensamiento abolicionista y nacionalista negro en vísperas de la Guerra de Secesión.Les années 1830 à 1860 virent la montée en puissance d’un mouvement abolitionniste radical et immédiatiste, partisan de la doctrine du ‘stay and fight’ (« rester et se battre »). La plupart des abolitionnistes noirs de cette période rejetaient alors logiquement le projet de colonisation des Noirs libres et émancipés en Afrique porté par l’American Colonization Society (ACS). Pourtant, dans le même temps, un certain nombre de militants africains-américains, bien que fermement opposés aux projets de l’ACS, préconisaient de leur côté une émigration choisie tout en peinant à trouver un consensus autour d’un lieu unique d’émigration. Au début des années 1850, James Theodore Holly, un Noir libre, soutint plus énergiquement l’idée d’une émigration en Haïti. Avec l’aide d’un abolitionniste blanc, James Redpath, recruté par le gouvernement haïtien lui-même – le Président Geffrard offrait alors un soutien matériel et financier aux candidats à l'émigration – Holly encouragea ses pairs à émigrer vers la République Noire, qu’il considérait comme étant l’endroit rêvé pour (re)construire la communauté noire.Ainsi, cet article examine dans quelles conditions des milliers d'Africains-Américains décidèrent de quitter la patrie qui les avait vus naître pour se rendre en Haïti. En mettant l'accent sur l’implication des Noirs eux-mêmes dans cette expérience haïtienne, un sujet marginalisé par l'historiographie de l'esclavage, de l'abolition et du colonialisme, l’auteure entend montrer la réelle diversité de la pensée abolitionniste et nationaliste noire à la veille de la guerre de Sécession
