This paper aims at evaluating the impact of the growing openness of national economies to international trade on the location of the food industry within countries. From French data, we show that trade liberalization affects the spatial allocation of agri-food production between regions. The effect of imports depends on the levels of accessibility and of production costs where sectors are set up. An increase in imports of agri-food outputs decreases production in sectors located in regions with high production costs while production rises in some regions with low production costs.
