L'ambivalence de l'insertion du tramway dans les espaces publics des villes françaises

The redeployment of tram networks in French cities, at the end of the eighties, is part of an overall objective of urban requalification that is clearly stated and planned by urban policies. However, these ambitions of urban policies tend to overshadow the consideration of uses, in public spaces laid out for trams, particularly in terms of road safety. According to the international scientific literature, and based on an exploratory study of accidents in these spaces in French cities, it appears that the layout of public spaces with tram systems generates specific road safety issues for users. These elements lead to question the way the legibility and safety of these new forms of public spaces are taken into account. Then, an in-depth analysis of the design processes of public spaces with trams systems would also be a way of better understanding the choices made, the compromises accepted, and the conflicts and constraints at work, weighing on the layout of these spaces.La réinsertion des tramways dans les villes françaises, depuis la fin des années 1980, s'inscrit dans des enjeux de requalification urbaine clairement affichés et planifiés par les politiques urbaines. Ces ambitions fortes des politiques urbaines, tendraient cependant à reléguer au second plan la prise en compte des conditions d'usage, notamment en termes de sécurité des déplacements, au sein des espaces publics aménagés pour l'insertion du tramway. En nous appuyant sur la littérature scientifique internationale et sur une étude exploratoire des accidents survenant dans de tels espaces dans les villes françaises, nous montrons que l'aménagement des espaces publics accueillant le tramway pose des problèmes de sécurité spécifiques pour les usagers. Ces éléments conduisent à s'interroger sur la prise en compte de la lisibilité et de la sécurité de ces nouvelles formes d'espaces publics. Une analyse approfondie des processus de conception de ces espaces publics accueillant le tramway permet également de mieux comprendre les choix opérés, les compromis réalisés, les conflits et contraintes en jeu ayant pesé sur l'aménagement de ces espaces
