Apport du géoréférencement à l’étude d’un aqueduc: le cas de l’aqueduc d’Arles,

International audienceThe studies carried of ancient aqueducts were satisfied with the evaluation of a medium slope which was calculated by the difference between the altitude of the water intake and the arrival point in the city. This method is inadequate. The channel slope depends on the topography. The maximum flow of water is dependent on the section where the slope is weakest and the least important. To know the debit possible you must have a precise topographic survey ofthe entire aqueduct. The use of a DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System) tacilitates georeferencing of the channel. The differences observed between segments of an aqueduct are not due to the imprecision of levelling tools. They are due to topographical constraints. The aqueduct of Arles, one of the great Roman aqueducts in Gallia Narbonnensis is presented as an example. It is the subject of a multidisciplinary research (archaeology of the construction, study of carbonate deposits, water uses, insertion in the colonial territory). The aqueduct was built in the time of Augustus to supply the Roman colony. A century later, one of the two branches was diverteded to supply an industrial building: the Barbegal mills. The most attention is given to the contribution of a topographic survey to reconstruct the original project of Roman contractors assigned to supply the city. The slopes of the channel were recorded using a DGPS. The precision of the levelling can recognize a succession of sections whose slopes vary. In the terminal part, crossing the plain of Crau imposed the digging of a long trench of 6.5 km. Its depth was calculated to maintain a slope which allowed a sufficient water flow.Les études portant sur les aqueducs antiques se sont satisfaites de l’évaluation d’une pente moyenne qui était calculée à partir de la différence entre l’altitude de la prise d’eau et celle du point d’arrivée dans la ville. Cette méthode n’est pas satisfaisante. La pente du canal dépend de la topographie. Son débit maximal est celui du segment dont la pente est la plus faible. Pour le connaître, il faut réaliser un relevé topographique précis de la totalité de l’aqueduc. L’utilisation d’un GPS Différentiel facilite le géoréférencement du canal. Les différences observée entre les segments d’un aqueduc ne sont pas dues a l’imprécision des outils de nivellement. Elles s’expliquent par les contraintes topographiques. L’aqueduc d’Arles, un des grands aqueducs romains de Gaule Narbonnaise, est présenté à titre d’exemple. Il fait l’objet d’une recherche pluridisciplinaire (archéologie de la construction, étude des dépôts carbonatés, usages de l’eau, insertion dans le territoire colonial) L’aqueduc a été construit à l’époque d’Auguste pour alimenter la colonie romaine. Un siècle après, une de ses deux branches a été dérivée pour alimenter un bâtiment industriel, les moulins de Barbegal. La plus grande attention est portée à l’apport d’une étude topographique pour la reconstitution du projet initial des entrepreneurs romains chargés d’alimenter la ville. Les pentes du canal ont été relevées à l’aide d’un GPS Différentiel. La précision du nivellement permet de reconnaître une succession de tronçons dont les pentes varient. Dans sa partie terminale, la traversée de la plaine de Crau imposait le creusement d’une tranchée longue de 6,5 km.
