"The potentially severe Desert Locust situation which developed in the Darfur and Kordofan States during July-September 1993 summer breeding period was averted by a combination of chemical control and subsequent unfavourable conditions for further breeding. The project contributed 28,000 litres of Chlorpyrifos ULV pesticide to the operations as well as the assistance of a pesticide application specialist. A brief training course on pesticide application was organized, but further training of locust control staff is needed. A long-term training programme is called for.Thought should be given to the possibility and the set-up of a multi-donor trust fund for the procurement of pesticides in Desert Locust emergency situations"
