EEC Assistance for the 1993 Emergency Locust Control Campaign in Sudan. Project findings and recommendations

"The potentially severe Desert Locust situation which developed in the Darfur and Kordofan States during July- September 1993 summer breeding period was averted by a combination of chemical control and subsequent unfavourable conditions for further breeding.The project contributed 8 200 litres of chlorpyrifos ULV pesticide to the operations. As the Desert Locust control operations had ended at the time of arrival of the pesticide, it was held in store.The present system of a number of separate FAO-Donor projects for the procurement of pesticides in Desert Locust emergency situations tends to be slower than the rapidly evolving locust situation demands.Thought should be given to the possibility and the set-up of a multi-donor trust fund for the procurement of pesticides in Desert Locust emergency situations"
