Teaching ResourceTeaching ResourcePhotographs of a Nineteenth century coffee plantation family. Coffee was initially planted in Rio de Janeiro and southern Minas Gerais, especially in the Paraiba river valley, and depended on slave labor. When the slavery economy went into crisis in the mid-Nineteenth century, planters in Sao Paulo encouraged European immigration, especially Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese and Italian workers, who arrived in large numbers. Between 1870 and 1920 over five million immigrants came to Brazil, half of which settled in the state of Sao Paulo as coffee plantation laborers.Fotografias de uma família fazendeira do século dezenove.
