At the signal of the singer the players move toward the center of the circle and the joo (game or play) begins. Capoeira movements and blows are based on head and footwork which are executed to the rhythm of the berimbau. The jogador may touch the ground only with his feet and his hands and there are no physical blows. The other player is seen not as an opponent but as an enigma presenting a variety of challenges in the form of offensive and defensive movements. a o it is characterized by malfcia (cunning) expressed by one jogador seeming to execute a certain movement and then surprising the other with a totally different one. Each °o a r carefully studies the other and tries to guess what his move will be. Some movements may seem very slow but both jogadores are alert. Quite unexpectingly a rapid blow may occur yet the other has already predicted the movement, defended himself and counterattacked, both blows passing only a few inches from the bodies of the players. The °logo continues with these attacks and defenses reaching amazing levels of agility, depending on the skill of the players. The berimbaus continue to play and the next two jogadores prepare themselves to enter the cir- cle. Basic movements are the key to caj2oeira and novices often spend too much time learning complicated offensive or defensive blows and forgeting how agility is enhanced. The movements include the follow- ing: A) The Giga (see Figure 3) refers to movement of the feet and it is here that the jogador prepares his attack with malfcia, moving back and forth, and trying to guess what his opponent will do. One must be ready for anything. B) The Negativa and Rolê (see Figure 4) are terms referring to ground movements. In the ne ag tiva the jogador tries to defend himself from a blow or begin a counterattack. Drawing 1 represents a regional negativa and 2 shows the angolá variation. The ró18 is the movement used to recover from a ne ag tiva and a basic variation is shown in Drawings 3 through 6. C) The Aú (see Figure 5) refers to upside down or cartwheel movements. Here the jogador learns basic lessons in equilibrium. 13 With a basic knowledge of these movements and the agility to perform them, the jogador is ready to attempt more complicated blows and engage in a ioeo.Demonstração de capoeira (Salvador). Movimentos básicos são a chave da capoeira e os principiantes muitas vezes gastam muito tempo aprendendo complicados golpes ofensivos e defensivos e esquecem como a agilidade é importante. Os movimentos incluem os seguintes: a) A Ginga (ver figura 3) refere-se a movimentos dos pés, e é aqui que o jogador prepara seu ataque com malícia, movendo-se para frente e para trás e tentando adivinhar o que seu adversário vai fazer. Tem que se estar pronto para tudo. b) A Negativa e o Rolê (ver figura 4) são temas referentes a movimentos no solo. Na negativa o jogador tenta se defender de um golpe ou iniciar um contra-13 ataque. O desenho 1 representa a Negativa Regional e o desenho 2 mostra a variação de Angola. O Rolê é o movimento usado para se recuperar de uma Negativa, e uma variação básica está mostrada nos desenhos 3-6. c) O Aú (ver figura 5) se refere a movimentos de cabeça para baixo ou estrela. Aqui o jogador aprende noções básicas de equilíbrio. Com um conhecimento básico destes movimentos e agilidade para executá-los, o jogador está pronto para tentar golpes mais complicados e se empenhar num Jogo
