In 1789, Ouro Preto witnessed the development of the Inconfidência Mineira, an intellectual conspiracy based on ideas of the French and U.S. revolutions, which sought freedom from Portugal. The Inconfidência was discovered by the Portuguese Crown and the conspirators either executed or exiled.
