Tons of iron ore are exported yearly through the ports of Tubarão (ES, near Vit6ria) and Rio de Janeiro. Minas Gerais also produces nearly 40% of the nation's steel. In 1897 the state capital was transferred from Ouro Preto to the small town of Curral d'el Rei in the heart of the state, now the city of Belo Horizonte.
