Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing carbon sequestration is critical for climate change mitigation. With the emergence of carbon markets and the development of compensatory mechanisms such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD+), there is much interest in measurement and monitoring of soil organic carbon (SOC). Detailed information on the distribution of SOC and other soil attributes, such as nitrogen (N), across the landscape is necessary in order to locate areas where carbon stocks can be increased and loss of soil carbon slowed down.
