Beras merupakan antara sumber makanan yang terbesar di seluruh dunia. Di Malaysia, purata penghasilan padi adalah lebih daripada 2 juta tan setahun. Daripada hasil padi yang dituai, sekitar 20% komposisinya adalah sekam padi yang biasanya akan terbuang.
