The intergenerational transmission of disadvantage refers to the transfer of social or economic disadvantage from parents to their adult children. Intergenerational welfare dependency limits the opportunities of children to realise their capabilities and to participate as full members of society, is economically inefficiently by wasting human resources, reduces people’s trust in social and political institutions, and undermines social cohesion.
