In this opening chapter, the author outlines his four part theory of imagination in the context of inclusive education. Drawing from such educators as Robinson, Zhao, and Greene, the chapter explores the need for imagination to be a key aspect of all levels of education in learning environments that are becoming increasingly constrained by neo-liberal policies of accountability and standardised testing. An action research project, in which disaffected secondary school students participated as key researchers, is outlined as it was in working with these young people that it became clear that imagination was the fundamental element that re-engaged them with mainstream education
