Reaction of 2-iodoynamides and vinylketenes generated in situ from cyclobutenones proceeds via a pericyclic cascade mechanism to produce highly substituted 2-iodoanilines. Tandem strategies for the synthesis of highly substituted indoles involving this benzannulation reaction were investigated.
