Three major categories of paid leave are discussed throughout this report: Parental Leave: For mothers (maternity leave) and fathers (paternity leave) to bond with a new child after birth, adoption, or foster placement. Family Leave: To care for a seriously or chronically ill family member. Family leave generally also includes parental leave. Medical Leave: For workers with a serious health condition who need time for self-care. Medical leave generally also includes leave for medical conditions related to pregnancy and childbirth.
