NON-STUTTERING DISFLUENCY IN BOONE’S STUCK IN LOVE FILM

This research investigates non-stuttering disfluency uttered by the characters in the American film Stuck in Love using psycholinguistic approach. It is aimed at explicating the types, patterns, and functions of non-stuttering disfluency performed in Stuck in Love. This research employed descriptive qualitative method. This research was also supported by quantitative method in presenting the occurrence of the data in frequency. The data were in the form of utterances, while the context of the data was the dialogues spoken by the characters in the film. The source of the data in this research was the film Stuck in Love where dialogues were transcribed to collect the raw data in the form of written texts. Inductive approach was used in analysing the data in this research. Triangulation was used to enhance trustworthiness as well as obtaining credibility and reliability of the data. The results of this research are stated as follows. All types of non-stuttering disfluency are uttered by the characters in Stuck in Love. They are interjection, repetition, revision, incomplete phrase, and broken word. Interjection is the most dominant type of non-stuttering disfluency while broken word is the least type of non-stuttering disfluency to occur in this research. Interjection appears because it is spontaneously uttered by the characters and it is the word which normally happens to pause the utterances. There are seven patterns of non-stuttering disfluency out of eleven patterns which appear in this film. The characters in Stuck in Love frequently uttered non-stuttering disfluency which is located in pre-utterance. In Stuck in Love, physiological function is the most frequently used by the characters. This function is always used by the characters because they need to plan what is next to say
